Mobile HR is creating new challenges and opportunities for HR directors and recruiters. As recruiting becomes increasingly digital, it opens up new opportunities for recruiters. Not only does it facilitate the hiring process, HR departments have a much larger array of candidates to choose from. However, once mobility became the next great step in the evolution of the internet, the digital application process hit a roadblock. It has been reported that in 2010, 10% of candidates searched for jobs and applied via mobile devices. Today, sources report that number is much higher and expected to continue to rise.

Despite the fact that people were using their smartphones more frequently for job hunting, the application completion rate on mobile has historically been low, compared to candidates who completed applications via laptops and desktops. Here's a closer look at what's driving the trend of mobile HR and mobile recruiting – and how you can prepare for these changes in your own recruiting process.

Common Barriers to Completing Mobile Applications

There are a number of common barriers to completing mobile applications. These include:

  • Length of the application: Perhaps one of the main reasons why people never complete the final step in a mobile job application is that it's simply too far away. Application rates actually drop by 365% if it takes a user more than 15 minutes to complete. In addition, the click-through rate for an application with 25 or fewer questions is 10.6%, whereas, with 50 or more questions, it drops to just 5.68%.
  • Platform issues: Asking a candidate to attach a resume from a mobile device can impact                 your application process in the mobile arena. Most people do not store their resume on their phones, and thus will have to wait to apply, or give up completely. You should consider asking for a link to a social channel, like LinkedIn, that will have their resume displayed on-screen.
  • Smaller Screens: Although this is not something a business can really help, the smaller an applicant's screen is on their mobile device, the less likely they are to complete the application process. It's simply easier to view the documentation on a laptop or desktop computer.

Additional Tips for Optimizing Your Mobile Applications

There is a rapid growth of mobile application rates as recruiters begin to understand the different landscape of mobility, and are adjusting their processes accordingly.

The mobile application completion rate is the highest it has ever been at 35%, and 45% of applications are started and/or completed from a mobile device, according to Paychex internal data.

By strategically investing in making your application mobile-friendly, it's possible to capture the benefits of mobile HR. Assume that a significant and rising percentage of your candidates are looking at your career pages and job ads on smartphones and tablets. Look for ways to shorten applications, allow for social media integration, and structure mobile-friendly questions. Not only will you continue to source great candidates, but you'll likely increase your ability to recruit forward-thinking and tech-savvy talent.
