Department of Homeland Security One Week Funding Bill

With the Department of Homeland Security in need of funding, President Obama signed a one-week funding bill. Will Congress agree on new legislation soon?

On Friday, February 27th President Barack Obama signed a one-week funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  The legislation serves to keep the agency open after the February 28th deadline, thus avoiding a partial shutdown of the DHS which would have likely resulted in the furlough of 30,000 employees and force hundreds of thousands of employees to work without pay.

Earlier on Friday, the House rejected a three-week funding extension for the agency because the bill did not block Obama's executive orders on immigration.  A bill with nearly $40 billion in DHS department funding for the full fiscal year, already passed by the Senate, will likely advance in the House this week.

Earlier in the month the House passed legislation that would fund the DHS but would also block funding for Obama's executive orders that lifted the threat of deportation for millions of undocumented residents.  The bill stalled in the Senate, forcing Congress to pass emergency funding before the shutdown deadline.

Paychex will continue to monitor and report on the developments of immigration reform.
