How Your Small Business Can Celebrate National Payroll Week

Every year, the American Payroll Association (APA) celebrates National Payroll Week (NPW), honoring American workers and the skilled, dedicated payroll professionals who make sure they get paid. Through the payroll withholding system, these men and women contribute, collect, report, and deposit more than $2 trillion, or more than 65 percent of the U.S. Treasury's annual revenue.

In 2016, National Payroll Week takes place between September 5-9. Across the country, businesses will recognize their payroll professionals who fulfill the essential duties of ensuring pay day arrives without interruption week after week, month after month. They also work to ensure the accuracy of payroll and compliance with increasingly complex tax and withholding requirements. Without their commitment to excellence, millions of employees might not get paid on time.

"National Payroll Week is one of the most exciting weeks of the year for me and for thousands of payroll professionals across the country," says Dan Maddux, APA Executive Director. Payroll professionals "deserve to be recognized for the hard work you do to create the perfect paycheck time and time again."

How can you and your company take part in National Payroll Week celebrations?

  • Distribute the "Getting Paid in America" survey among your employees. By sharing their opinions on the payroll process, they can help the APA better understand the trends affecting payroll and employees. (In 2015, more than 34,000 people took part in the survey.) Participants who complete the survey are eligible to win a trip for two to Las Vegas.
  • Lobby for a city or state payroll week proclamation. Last year, 129 NPW government proclamations took place in cities across the U.S. The APA aims to beat that number in 2016! (Find out how to lobby for a payroll week proclamation.)
  • Fill out the quick, easy-to-complete NPW Supporter Commitment Form on the NPW website and become an NPW supporter. In return, your business website will be featured on the NPW site (which garnered more than 854,000 page views from May-September 2015); recognition in PAYTECH magazine, with its 20,000-plus subscribers; and recognition in the NPW video shown at the APA's Annual Congress, where thousands of payroll and HR professionals gather.
  • Celebrate in your workplace with an NPW-themed cake, contests, and games.

Also, encourage employees to check out the NPW site, which features tips on reducing taxes and how to save up to 35 percent in everyday expenses like daycare and medical costs. Through NPW's educational resources, everyone in your organization can learn more about the intricacies of Social Security benefits, direct deposit, employer work eligibility, child support, and more efficient ways to manage one's paycheck. This is the kind of valuable information that can benefit us all, year-round.
