B. Thomas Golisano with $3,000, one employee, and 40 clients, founded a new company in Rochester, NY called Paymaster – soon to be Paychex, to provide payroll to small- to-medium sized businesses.

Company Consolidation

Paychex quickly expanded beyond Rochester to include 18 franchises and partnerships, which in 1979 were consolidated into one privately held company.
